Silver Falls

These are pictures of our hike to the North Falls. We spotted a trout and a crayfish from the trail and since I couldn't catch the fish, I took my socks off and went after the crayfish. It brought back memories of catching crawdads in the Nehalem River as a kid only with no hotdog chunk tied to a string. At the bottom, Emily poses at the Upper North Falls.

Life on the Farm

Caribou Country

We left Chicken the day before the hunt so we could be ready the next morning. The trail into the cabin was an absolute highway of sludge! Byron is sporting the Frogg Toggs, the ultimate in impenetrable outdoor gear.

It rained for about 50% of the first day - the rest of the day being a mixture of hail, overcast, and sunny weather. As for the caribou, who knows what their story is?

Beach Fun

The best part of moving to Oregon has been the opportunity to be near family. While Dave was hunting in Alaska, I was spending time at the Oregon Coast.

The Move...

We don't have many pictures of our drive down through Canada. Most of our footage is on video or on Mary's camera. We'll try to post more later, but until then, here are a few photos from the beginning of our journey...

We learned that they have attack ravens at the Alaska/Canada border. This bird had no fear. He climbed all over my car while I was eating. I guess he could see the food through the windows and thought he would try to steal a bite.

"It's not a tuma"

Arnold quotes were common among crew members while we fought fires in Northern California. I am lucky enough to have time to post a few pictures before we leave Juneau and head for Salem tomorrow but apologize for such little explanations due to restricted time. We should be posting more photos of our road trip through Canada when we arrive in Salem.

While Mark and Dad rode the tram up Mt. Roberts, Emily and I went up to the library to pass some time. While inside, I read an article - "How to catch big 'buts." Apparently, big baits are the key to catching big halibut. I decided to experiment and came up with this cocktail bait that included 4 pieces of salmon belly soaked in herring oil, one hooligan, a twelve inch whole herring and two sharp stainless steel hooks.

This 65 lb. halibut took the bait! Mark taught us how all how to gaff with his sweet gaffing skills. He also has other talents including nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills and computer hacking skills.

I also caught this ling cod which is somewhat of a rarity for Juneau's waters.

We got up early the next morning and hooked into some chums at Amalga Harbor.

4 fish for 4 weary fisherman. We got to the fishing hole at 4:30am and didn't leave until 12:30pm

The money crab...this was the biggest dungeness crab we have seen. Gary and Mark pulled the crab pot that held it. They are feasting on it as I type this post.

We spent the night at Windfall cabin before fishing. We had a tasty meal of kielbasa, bratwurst and s'mores.

This is a juvenile eagle feasting on a halibut carcass on the beach in front of our house. The guys have taken to leaving carcasses on the beach in order to bring in the eagles. We will post better eagle footage soon.
